AVICULTURIST
Homo sapiens
SIZE
Varies from about 4 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet, 4 inches
RANGE
Aviculturists (or bird keepers) can often be found in the Aquarium's food prep kitchen or in other behind-the-scenes areas. You may see one feeding the birds in the Cove Forest or Delta Country galleries.

DIET
Typically omnivorous (eating everything from cheeseburgers to broccoli), although some may be vegetarian or vegan.

Aviculturists are in charge of feeding, treating diseases and observing the behavior of birds in the Aquarium's Cove Forest and Delta Country exhibits. Not only do aviculturists care for a variety of adult birds, they are also responsible for caring for any baby birds born at the Aquarium. When not working with exhibits, aviculturists can be found studying birds in the wild. They may observe bird behavior or they may conduct bird counts to make sure wild bird populations are healthy. An aviculturist usually has a degree in ornithology (the study of birds) biology or another related field. They must have knowledge of local and exotic animals, experience in caring for animals, people skills and the ability to work with a team.
