The Tennessee Aquarium’s Serve & Protect sustainable seafood program is helping inland residents reduce their impact on the world ocean. We’re encouraging everyone to discover wise choices that help take fishing pressure off species that are in trouble. Globally, one-third of all fished species have collapsed. Put simply, people currently eat too many fish from too few species. The Tennessee Aquarium has a great partner in this long-term effort – Alton Brown. The Food Network star’s passion for protecting marine resources is contagious. As a result, people get excited about gaining a better understanding of sustainable seafood through this multi-faceted program.
Aquarium visitors learn about select species on display and are encouraged to try one of the featured Serve & Protect menu offerings at partnering restaurants in Chattanooga. Information about how to purchase sustainable seafood at local markets is available on this website. And we’re helping everyone discover new ways to prepare these seafood offerings at home. Chef Brown has developed recipes specifically for this program so that anyone can become a culinary ocean hero in their own kitchen. This "see it, try it, buy it, cook it and enjoy it" approach is designed to help everyone improve personal health while protecting wildlife downstream.
Let’s be honest, conversations about sustainable seafood can be confusing. As a simple solution to eating more sustainably, we support seafood caught or raised in the United States. Buying American not only supports U.S. jobs, but we also believe our own regulations are an important way to ensure sustainable fishing practices in wild caught or farm raised fish.
