Premiere Screening of Galapagos 3D: Nature’s Wonderland to Support Aquarium’s Conservation Initiatives

Chattanooga, Tenn. (May 12, 2014) – The Galapagos Islands top many nature-lovers’ bucket lists. Straddling the Equator in the midst of the Pacific Ocean, this volcanic island chain is a paradise unlike any other – home to some 9,000 species.

On Tuesday, May 20th, Chattanoogans will be able to witness the splendor of this remote and rugged destination with an experienced guide. Wildlife conservationist and Emmy Award-winning TV host Jeff Corwin will host a premiere screening of Galapagos 3D: Nature’s Wonderland at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater. “I was thrilled to provide the narration for this amazing project,” said Corwin. “It literally took my breath away. Despite traveling the world for 20 years hosting and creating documentaries, I was thoroughly impressed with this incredible film.”

Scientists flock to this biodiversity hotspot to study how curious plants and animals have adapted to thrive over millions of years in relative isolation. Filmmakers used cutting-edge cameras to fill the six-story screen with a bevy of fascinating creatures. Viewers will be thrilled by massive half-ton tortoises that lumber among flocks of dancing blue-footed boobies and flightless cormorants. Penguins, living thousands of miles from their natural habitats, share the seas with unique marine iguanas that spit sea-salt. “There are not too many places more powerful than the Galapagos Islands when it comes to understanding our planet,” said Corwin. “Galapagos 3D: Nature’s Wonderland perfectly captures what makes the creatures living there such unique characters.”

Audiences will be captivated by this giant screen story of discovery, of survival against the odds, and of nature’s ingenuity, especially after hearing Corwin speak about preserving biodiversity and protecting species on the brink of extinction. Throughout his career, Corwin has been a leading voice for conservation. His informative and entertaining television programs have reached millions of people with vital messages about the challenges facing our planet. In this case, how the natural treasures of the Galapagos need to be seen and understood. “We think of the Galapagos as a resilient community because it has withstood the test of time for millions of years,” said Corwin. “But it is still a delicate environment and, in the 21st century, it faces many significant pressures from the effects of a changing climate, habitat loss, pollution and the unsustainable harvesting of natural resources.”

Corwin’s appearance in Chattanooga will help support the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute’s (TNACI) freshwater conservation initiatives. Similar to the Galapagos Islands, the Southeast’s geography, climate and abundant natural resources set the stage over time for an amazing array of animals and plants to thrive. “We live in the middle of an underwater rainforest,” said Dr. Anna George, TNACI director. “More than half of the freshwater fish species found in the United States live in the Southeast. Our rivers and streams also contain 90 percent of all freshwater mussels, 70 percent of all turtle species and 60 percent of all salamanders found in the United States. Like the Galapagos Islands, we live in one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots and we are working to build a more resilient ecosystem to protect the freshwater species living in our backyard.”

Corwin will introduce Galapagos 3D: Nature’s Wonderland at 6pm on Tuesday, May 20th. After the premiere screening, he will entertain questions about his experiences in the Galapagos and his efforts to study and protect wildlife around the world. “I hope that this film will inspire a new generation to become good stewards of this delicate planet.”

Tickets to this special evening at IMAX with Jeff Corwin are $15 for Aquarium members and $20 for non-members. Purchase event tickets online.
